Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU) is one of the largest higher educational establishments in Chernivtsi. It is a fully governmental multi-structural educational institution of the highest level of accreditation providing educational programs of different levels. BSMU included in the general register of the WHO, Magna Charta Universitatum (Bologna, Italy), European University Association (EUA), Association of the Carpathian Region Universities.
Over the years of its existence (1944-2021), the University has trained more than 30 000 specialists including the following specialties: General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Pediatrics, Medical Psychology, Clinical Pharmacy.
BSMU includes:
6 faculties (four medical, stomatological, pharmacological);
educational-scientific institute of post-graduate education;
49 departments;
center of simulation medicine and innovative technologies;
educational-producing chemist;
college.
International activities
Today the university maintains friendly relations with 60 foreign universities and research institutes. Only for the last three years agreements have been signed with the University. Sabatier Fields, Toulouse (France), Vilnius University (Lithuania), University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and other leading educational institutions around the world. The result is the development of strategic partnerships and networking with foreign higher education institutions and the intensification of academic mobility of students, young scientists and faculty. Since 2006, the university has been actively involved in the implementation of grant projects, in particular in the internship program for future doctors “Medical Students Without Borders”. which was funded with support from the Lyon Club of Austria. The University has joined the MEDEA (Alliance of Medical Universities) project under the Erasmus Mundus program. During the project implementation, students and masters of the university had the opportunity to study in partner institutions for a period of 6 to 10 months. The project aimed to develop cooperation and mobility in the field of health education, improve the quality of European higher education and promote intercultural understanding.
One of the important achievements of BSMU is the won grant project “TAME” (“Learning to avoid medical errors”). The aim of the project was to implement innovative learning strategies in health education in partner countries and to modernize medical education programs by using interactive forms and methods of teaching “virtual patients” to avoid the most common medical errors during treatment. The TAME project in 2019 is in its final stages.
An important area of international activity of our institution of higher education is the development and implementation of academic mobility projects. The active participation of the university in the competitions of grant projects of the Erasmus + program in the direction of KA1 “Mobility in higher education” every year provides more and more opportunities for international experience for both students and teachers of the university. Currently, cooperation under this program is implemented with 5 European educational institutions: the University of Foggia (Italy), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), the University. Fields Sabatier (France), Lithuanian University of Medical Sciences (Lithuania), and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova (Romania).
On the basis of BSMU, a regional contact point of the EU framework program “Horizon 2020” was opened in the thematic area: health, demographic change, and wellbeing.
Within the framework of membership in the European Association of Universities BSMU joined the implementation of joint projects and research in the field of higher education. After competitive selection, the university was included in the Ukrainian-Swiss project “Development of medical education in Ukraine”, which began in December 2018 and will last until the end of 2022 and is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation of the Swiss Federal Foreign Office. – about 5 million Swiss francs). The aim of the project is to improve the system of medical education and, in the future, to improve the quality of health services to the population of Ukraine.

BSMU is actively working to recruit foreign citizens to study. Today about 1800 foreign citizens from 22 countries of the world receive higher education in our educational institution.
